Common Ingredients in Joint Supplements

Glucosamine

Glucosamine is one of the most common ingredients in horse joint supplements. Glucosamine is the building block of chondroitin sulfate, a specific type of polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAGs).

Glucosamine not only has protective role in joints that goes beyond supplying the basic building blocks for the production of new, healthy tissue, it also has the ability to block enzymes that lead to cartilage breakdown.

Chondroitin sulfate

Chondroitin sulfate is synthesized by chondrocytes, the living cells inside cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate is usually manufactured from animal byproducts, such as shark and cow cartilage. It can also be made in a lab.

Chondroitin sulfate is the building block of the much larger molecule proteoglycan (PG). It also stimulates the production of new cartilage while inhibiting the enzymes that break down cartilage similar to glucosamine.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane )

MSM is very popular for its antioxidant and other properties which support healthy joints, skin and coat, hooves, the respiratory tract, and other tissues in horses.

MSM also provides a highly usable form of sulfur that plays critical roles in the formation of proteins such as enzymes, hormones, and immune cells and connective tissues. It also plays an important role in the formation of connective tissues such as bones, tendons, and ligaments.

MSM For Horses Buying Guide

Selecting a quality MSM supplement for your horse can be challenging when the market is overloaded with all kinds of products. But consideration of a few things can overcome the selection problem.

You can evaluate MSM supplement against some criteria that suits you the best. I believe the points below are significant for selecting the best MSM supplement for horses:

  1. Price
  2. Quantity
  3. Flavor
  4. Type of MSM Supplement
  5. Other reviews

1. Price

The price of MSM supplements vary greatly from one manufacturer to another. Just because something costs more doesn't necessarily mean that a product is far more superior and the low or affordable product also doesn't mean it's a poor product.

Keep in mind price doesn't always determine the quality of a product. It would not be wise to choose a supplement based only on the cost. I highly recommend that you always do your own research and compare products side by side to help you find the best supplement for your horse.

2. Quantity

The quantity is also important when choosing a supplement. However, it becomes even more important when you have a large horse. With a large horse, the dosage it needs also increases. So as a horse owner, you would want to look into buying a product that is designed for large horses. When you do that, you will be able to save money in the long run. One disadvantage to this is that sometimes the powder may become clumped and hard due to constant exposure to air. Don't fret, often times the clumped powder breaks up easily.

3. Flavor

Only the price and quantity are not sufficient for a wise selection. The flavor of the supplement is also another important attribute to consider. There is no point of getting a supplement that has both the right price and quantity if the taste of the supplement is not appealing to your horse.

This is especially important if your horse is a picker eater. Some MSM supplements are flavored while other are not. Be sure to choose the flavor your horse will love if they are a fussy eater.

One of the most effective methods for getting your picky horse to eat their supplements is to slowly introduce the supplement. Sometimes, when you try to add a full dose of equine supplement to your horse’s food right away, they may reject it immediately.

However, if you slowly introduce the horse supplement through small, mildly increasing doses, it gives your horse more time to adjust. As you add more and more over time, eventually they get used to the taste and will start to enjoy their horse supplements.

4. Type Of MSM Supplement

Equine supplements are available in granular, powdered and pellet forms. Every horse has different preferences, so learning what your individual horse prefers and choosing supplements based on that knowledge can be immensely helpful.

Some supplements such as those high in fat, can’t be pelleted, because they won’t hold their form. The good thing is that horses usually love the taste of high-fat powders.

Supplements in paste form are generally intended for occasional use. While pastes are the perfect way to provide your horse with extra support on certain occasions, powders and pellets are designed to be administered on a daily basis.

5. Other Reviews

Apart from the price, quantity, flavor, and the type of MSM supplement, you may also want to check out how many other horse owners have purchased the supplement you are looking to buy. If the reviews are mostly positive, the product is likely a good product, but that’s not always a guarantee.

If the reviews are negative or only a couple of people have bought it, it also doesn’t mean it’s a bad product and you should avoid it altogether. You might want to order one and give it a test run. You never know when your horse might benefit greatly from the product. Always keep in mind that every individual horse is different and results may vary.

This bio-available source of dietary sulfur also plays a critical role the formation of proteins such as enzymes, hormones, immune cells, and connective tissues.

Although MSM is naturally-occurring in foods such as alfalfa and whole grains, the amount of MSM from the horse's diet is unlikely to be sufficient compared to supplementing with the pure ingredient. This makes supplementation important to promote joint, cartilage and skin health.

One of my favorite things about Animed Pure MSM is that they are available in 1, 2.25, 5, 10, and 20 pounds. So you can buy the 1 pound one to try out and once you notice improvement in your horse, then you can go with the 20 pounds, which is way more cost effective.

3. Vita Flex Pro MSM Joint Supplement

Vita Flex MSM Horse Joint Supplement contains only premium quality, ultra pure MSM, with no additional ingredients of any kind. This form of MSM is appropriate for both large and small animals. MSM is a form of organic sulfur found in all living organisms and is the primary metabolite of DMSO.

MSM is found in very small amounts in most vegetables, fruits, and grains, but it is easily lost due to its volatile nature. The heat and water processing of feeds and the drying of hay destroys MSM. The horse’s diet is unlikely to contain significant amounts of MSM unless it consists primarily of raw, fresh grain or forage.

You can avoid the risk of inferior products by getting Vita Flex MSM. This product is not only recommended for horse, it can also be given to dogs and cats. This supplement contains an odorless, white crystalline granules that is easy to give to your pet. You can give MSM dry or dissolve in lukewarm water first before administering to your pet.

  4. Wow, So much great information. I normally use Finish Line for my horses because I can get it delivered to the farm. My Vet told me to buy it for my horse, but thanks to your site, now I know why. I don’t ride my horse (Thunder) in the winter as much as I do in the summer. My Vet told me that I needed it to help Thunder out in the colder months even though he doesn’t get as much exercise.
