How To Take Organic Sulfur?

How To Take Organic Sulfur - Glass of lime water and sulfur

I believe everyone should acclimatize when starting to take organic sulfur. If you have many food allergies, it's very important to start out with a low amount and gradually increase to the recommended amount.

Don't make the mistake I made. When I first started taking organic sulfur, I jumped right into taking the recommended dose without acclimatization, and it was definitely not a smart move.

In this post, I will share with you how to take organic sulfur the correct way.

So without further ado, let's get started!

  1. Take 1/2 teaspoon of organic sulfur once a day in the early morning for 4 days, then
  2. Increase to 1/2 teaspoon twice a day (early AM and about 9 hours later) for 4 days, then
  3. Increase to 1 teaspoon twice a day (same times) for 4 days; then

If there are no flu-like symptoms at any level then you can increase the amount more rapidly. If you experience mild upset more than 2 days at any level, just go back to the previous level for an extra week. Give your body time to adjust.

How To Take Organic Sulfur

The general guide after acclimatization or to maintain on therapeutic maintenance is to take 1 teaspoon per 100 lbs twice daily (early AM and about 9 hours later), preferably between meals or on an empty stomach, so nothing interferes with its full utilization in the body.

As you begin taking organic sulfur, if you experience flu-like symptoms, dizziness, or the onset of diarrhea, don’t worry, these are actually normal and natural detoxification process.

These symptoms will get better over time. In most cases, organic sulfur crystals have absolutely no side effects if consumed within the recommended amount.

During pregnancy, many women suffer from some of the ailments that organic sulfur may be able to help with, such as poor circulation, acne, and constipation. There are some studies that suggest that organic sulfur is safe for pregnant women.

However, since it has not been tested and approved by the FDA, you should take specific care when using it.

As with any other medication or dietary supplement, you should check with your healthcare provider before taking anything during pregnancy.

Organic Sulfur (MSM) is considered non-toxic and you can't take too much of it. The most common complaints associated with taking too much sulfur are diarrhea, light sleep agitation, and headaches.

If you took too much, your body will simply excrete the excess sulfur out of your body through the gastrointestinal system.

When you are ill or recovering from an illness, before a heavy workout, or feeling tired during the day, take an extra 1 or 2 teaspoon of organic sulfur on top of the recommended amount to help with the recovery process.

Organic Sulfur is also safe for people taking medications. It should be noted, however, that organic sulfur can thin the blood. So if you are on blood thinners, check with your doctor before using. Be sure to always discuss with a medical professional before starting any supplement regimen.

Three Ways Of Taking Organic Sulfur (MSM)

  1. You can put organic sulfur directly into your mouth and quickly swallow it with a few sips of water and follow with 8-10 oz of water.
  2. You can also mix organic sulfur crystals in a small glass of warm or room temperature water and stir the mixture until they are fully dissolved.
  3. You can put sulfur crystals in empty capsules and take them like regular pills. Click here to learn how!

The taste of the mixture is pretty bitter and some people may find it hard to swallow. There are a few things you can mix it with without the risk of rendering it ineffective.

Personally, the bitter taste doesn't bother me. But if you find the bitterness offensive, you can mix sulfur with fresh lemon or lime juice, tea, or coffee to mask the flavor. Here are a couple of my favorite sulfur recipes

If your organic sulfur dissolves very easily in room temperature water then it is likely that the sulfur is not pure. At this point, you might want to consider a different product.

Organic sulfur should have large crystals of flake appearance, as shown in the image to the right.

In order for it to be biologically safe and effective, organic sulfur must be pure and free of all additives.

Substances such as flow agent, coatings, binding agents and silica added to sulfur will reduce its effectiveness. In some cases, it can even be dangerous.

I've tried out numerous sulfur products. This  organic sulfur (MSM) brand is the one that made the biggest difference in my health.

Stay Hydrated

How To Take Organic Sulfur?

Maintaining proper hydration is important when taking organic sulfur since it helps to detoxify the body and water is needed to help flush these cellular wastes out of the body.

I use the rule of 1 liter of filtered or purified water per 50 lbs of body weight per day. For example, a person weights 150 lbs should drink about 3 liters of water per day.

It needs to be noted that soda, coffee, tea, juice, beer, or wine do not qualify as water.

Four Things To Avoid

1. Avoid drinking chlorinated or fluoridated water with organic sulfur, they will interfere with sulfur's effectiveness. Make sure you drink only filtered or purified water.

2. Avoid taking any medications, supplements, vitamins, and foods with organic sulfur. I recommend taking organic sulfur first, and wait 30 minutes before taking anything else. The fillers or anti-caking agents that are commonly used to manufacture pills and powders will deactivate sulfur.

3. Avoid taking organic sulfur 5 hours before bedtime, if you do, you might have a hard time falling asleep.

4. Avoid taking shower within 5 hours of taking organic sulfur, chlorine, and fluoride in shower water will make sulfur less effective.

Organic Sulfur & Vitamin C

How To Take Organic Sulfur

Organic sulfur helps to open up your cells and make them more permeable. This allows harmful substances to flow out while permits nutrients to flow in. And vitamin C works by repairing the tissues throughout the body.

Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant, protecting your body’s cells from damage from environmental toxins and free radicals.

Most vitamin C is in the forms of a capsule or pill. The additives, bonding agents, or anti-caking agents that are commonly used to manufacture capsules or pills will negatively affect sulfur.

Most vitamin C is in the forms of a capsule or pill. The additives, bonding agents, or anti-caking agents that are commonly used to manufacture capsules or pills will negatively affect sulfur.

To ensure that any additives included in supplements and medications don’t interfere with sulfur, I recommend that you take organic sulfur first, then wait 30 minutes before taking vitamin c.

If you don't want to take organic sulfur with vitamin  C in the forms of pills or capsules, you can also mix organic sulfur with freshly squeezed orange, lime, or lemon juice and dilute it with some water to get all the benefits.

Here is a post where I share two of my favorite sulfur recipes

Lemon and lime juice are the most acidic fruit juices of all, with a pH of 2 to 2.6, which can quickly erode your tooth enamel. Enamel is hard to grow back and once it’s severely damaged, it can even be irreparable.

Make sure you drink lemon water carefully so it does not touch your teeth or drink with a straw so that it bypasses your teeth.

And don’t brush your teeth immediately after drinking lemon water. This will wear away the enamel even more as the citric acid is still fresh on your teeth. Before you do brush, rinse your mouth with water.

Organic Sulfur & Dr. Willard's Water

Dr. Willard's Water

Taking organic sulfur (MSM) together with Willard water can be highly beneficial for your health.

Catalyst Altered Water or Willard's Water is a patent-protected water concentrate. The water has been altered at a molecular level. It was invented by Dr. John Willard. You can check out my review on Willard Water Products for more information.

Willard's water is a liquid concentrate and when you mix it with filtered water in the correct proportions, the resulting drinkable water has quite amazing properties for healing.

Willard's Water mainly helps to greatly enhance the body's absorption of nutrients so a greater percentage of what the body needs is actually absorbed into the cells and put to use.

This means that you get more out of your food and any nutritional supplements you take when you include Willard's Water in your daily regimen.

Now you know how to take organic sulfur (MSM). By starting with a low dose and gradually increase to the recommended dose will help to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.

I hope you find this post helpful. If you got value out of this post, please kindly share this information with others. I would really appreciate it if you could do that for me.

  1. Dear Hong,

    Thank you for this information!
I just started taking it yesterday (2 teaspoons in 2 glasses of water over the day) but I felt very strange in the evening and today as well. It’s like I have all the flu-symptoms without the cold; sore joints, cold to the bone, not hungry at all. I am probably taking too much to start off with..

Can you tell us more about the detoxification process that the body goes through when you start taking it?

    Thank you!

  2. My schedule doesn’t permit me to wait 5 hours to shower after taking the organic sulfur. I take my sulfur with warm water followed by Celtic sea salt mixed with warm water around 8am. Then 30 minutes later I take my Lugol’s iodine along with all my morning vitamins, including bio-identical hormones and Armour thyroid. I take a very substantial amount of vitamins, including all those suggested with the Lugol’s protocol. It is my understanding that most people are highly deficient in both sulfur and iodine and both of these minerals help detox the body of toxins. Back to the showering, I take my shower about an hour after the sulfur and iodine. This is the first time I have heard about the waiting period between the ingestion of sulfur and taking a shower. At this point I am so confused and wish I could have more clarity on my individual situation.
I noticed my heels soften immediately once I started the sulfur. I have been losing my hair and eyebrows over the last year and desperately trying to remedy this situation. I’ve had hormones checked, increased iron as my labs show low Ferritin levels so my Dr. had me change brand of iron and I will retest my labs end of Sept.
I am seeing new hair growing on my scalp but very little as far as eyebrows, although I know they grow much slower. I had a lower blepharoplasty done last year using topical anesthesia and I believe that may have had something to do with the eyebrow loss because that is exactly when I started losing. Also do 4 Botox treatments a year and am wondering if that is causing the hair loss as a lot of the loss is around the bang hair line and temples. Any advice you can give me I sure would appreciate. I will be placing my first order but looking for guidance, TIA

    1. Hello Debbie,

It’s best to wait five hours after taking your second dose of MSM for the day. This allows for a maximum absorption of MSM in the body.

Does that mean MSM won’t work at all if you shower right after or within 5 hours of taking MSM? No, it just means that the chlorine or fluoride in the shower water will make MSM less effective.

    1. Hello Kevin,
You are very welcome. Here is an article that talks more about sulfur deficiency and the things we can do to increase our sulfur level in the body. I think you might find this article interesting.

    1. Hello Melinda,
Sulfur is an important mineral that is needed in order for our bodies to function optimally. Here is an article that provides a detailed explanation on the importance of sulfur. I have written another article that talks about how chemical fertilizers used in modern farming have significantly interfered with the vitamins and minerals that we receive in the foods we consume. Yes, our foods do contain sulfur, but conventionally grown foods may not have as much of sulfur content and other nutrients than organically grown foods. Here is a food recipe that I enjoy very much myself that is rich in sulfur content. I hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me any other question.

      1. Thank You for all the info. Very informative indeed. I do have a question which pertains to how to get the best results. Articles say it’s okay to used with lemon, lime may be even other pure fruit juice, (makes sense) but have also seen reference to putting it in coffee, teas, smoothies and such….would that render it less effective? I’ve seem articles stating you can use it with protein powder, collagen powderd etc. What do you recommend? THANKS

        1. Hello Linda,

You are very welcome for the information. Combining vitamin c from citrus fruits with MSM help to make MSM more effective. Here is an article for additional information. Some people prefer to take MSM with coffee, tea or smoothies. Keep in mind that this would make MSM less effective. Even though MSM can still work when combined with coffee, tea or smoothies. However, you may not get the most benefit out of them. This means you are likely having to take it for a longer period of time before you start noticing improvement. I hope this helps.

          Best Regards,

  9. Thank you for the information. I have never considered the effects of the water that I take my supplements with before. I will have to be more careful. I did not realize that it would keep me awake. That has advantages.

    1. Hello Tara,
Yes, proper hydration is very important when it comes to taking organic sulfur. Water is needed to flush out the toxins and wastes from the body. Since sulfur boosts energy level, it is best to avoid taking it at least 5 hours before bedtime to avoid insomnia.

    2. Thanks for very useful advice. I have a question here, if i am down with flu, should i temporarily stop taking sulfur until i become well?

      1. Hello Sharon, you are very welcome. It’s recommended that you do not temporarily stop taking organic sulfur when you have flu. If taking organic sulfur for a severe illness, a few weeks after you have recovered, it will be fine to reduce the amount to what is recommended for your normal weight. However, while you are ill or recovering from an illness, you take more than is recommended for the restoration of good health. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other question.

        All the best,
